Looking from the main island platform across to the relief island platform showing another floral display on the platform. The railway companies encouraged station staff to grow flowers and to keep their stations tidy with regional and national competitions. In the main the cost was borne by the staff themselves although the tendering of plants was often undertaken during quieter periods. The platform numbering at Acocks Green reflected both the direction and importance of the traffic. The up main platform to London was numbered platform one because London took precedence over Birmingham, the down main was numbered platform two because it was for through fast traffic, the up relief platform three and the down relief platform was numbered platform four reflecting the direction of travel.
