GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton

Acocks Green & South Yardley Station: gwrag1065

A pre-1913 view showing the north (Birmingham) end of the station with the main lines running through the centre

When the lines between Olton and Tyseley were quadrupled in January 1907, the tracks were arranged with the main lines in the middle and the relief lines as two long loops on either side. This arrangement lasted until June 1913 when the track was re-ordered in to two pairs of running lines (Main and Relief). This photograph taken prior to 1913, shows the north (Birmingham) end of the station with the main lines running through the centre. A small Permanent Way gang is working on the up main line. The main access to the two island platforms was from staircases descending from either side of the booking office, which can be seen located above the platforms on the station side of the Sherbourne Road bridge. This bridge was reconstructed with three spans when the line was quadrupled. Both the central span and the span across the down relief line had to bridge double tracks because running parallel to this was a down goods loop.
