GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton

Acocks Green & South Yardley Station: gwrag17b

Close up of the Birmingham end of the up platform showing Acocks Green first signal box which was replaced in 1907 and the up passenger building

This close up of image 'gwrag17' of the Birmingham end of the up platform shows Acocks Green first signal box which was replaced in 1907 and the up passenger building. Evidence can be seen of a refuge siding off the up track the other side of the bridge which was used to move slow goods trains out of the paths of passenger trains. Martin Crane writes, 'The Signal Box was replaced as stated in 1907. This was when the line was quadrupled as far as Olton, requiring the rebuild of the station at the same time. Quadrupling southwards from Olton to Lapworth was done in 1932. The Relief lines were subsequently removed between Tyseley and Lapworth in stages between 1967 and 1969 in connection with the Saltley resignalling scheme'.
