GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Acocks Green & South Yardley Station: gwrag2447
Ex-GWR 2-6-0 43xx Class No 6349 stands at platform 1 with
the 6:05pm Snow Hill to Leamington service on 4th May 1959. The line was
normally used by express services but because of the heavy commuter traffic
exiting from Birmingham it had to use the up main. Less than ten minutes
previously the 5:52pm from Snow Hill would have stopped at platform 3, as the
6:00pm express conveying passengers from Birkenhead to Paddington raced through
Acocks Green on the up main. Hard on the heels of the 6:05pm, seen above, would
be the 6:25pm selective stopping service from Moor Street. The canvas sheeting
rolled up at the back of the cab roof was used by crews in bad weather to
protect them from the elements. During the Second World War it was used as a
blackout curtain to screen the glare of the fire from enemy aircraft.
