GWR Route: Hatton to Bearley and Alcester Branch

Bearley Station: gwrb781

View from the new passenger footbridge looking along the new platform extensions towards Hatton

By the late 1930’s the 4½ mile single line section between Hatton and Bearley was an unacceptable bottleneck and work started in 1938 to double the line. Additionally at Bearley both platforms were extended, the down platform waiting room rebuilt, a passenger footbridge provided and goods yard weighbridge relocated. This view from the new passenger footbridge looking along the new platform extensions towards Hatton shows the work in progress in March 1939. This is an interim phase, the pointwork in the foreground and siding trap point on what will become the new down running line will soon be removed and a new trailing cross-over established beyond the road bridge. Notice the replacement up starter signal with X on the arm, indicating it is not in use.
