GWR Route: Hatton to Bearley and Alcester Branch
Bearley Station: gwrbj2343
Ex-GWR 2-8-0 28xx Class No 2859 passes Bearley distant
signal with an iron ore train for South Wales in 1956. The train is fully
equipped with vacuum fitted wagons in order to enable the driver to handle such
heavy loads down the various banks , including this section where the train
descends a one and half mile steep 1 in 70 gradient. Built by Swindon works in
May 1918, No 2859 remained in service until December 1964 when it was withdrawn
from 81C Southall shed. Prior to the 28xx Class being introduced, refuge
sidings were built to accommodate trains of 50 wagons but with the introduction
of this class, refuge sidings needed to have their capacity increased to handle
trains of up to 70 wagons loaded or 100 when being returned empty.
