Ex-GWR 4-6-0 Castle class No 5076 'Gladiator'' is seen
standing at Platform 2 whilst at the head of a down Class B local passenger
service. In January 1941 the GWR re-named twelve Castle locomotives commencing
with No 5071, re-named Spitfire, as part of their 'doing their bit' to promote
morale within the British population during the Second World War. Originally
built by Swindon works in August 1938 as 'Drysllwyn Castle' No 5076 was first
allocated to Exeter shed and was later re-named 'Gladiator'. Later allocated to
Bath Road in Bristol where No 5076 was recorded both in August 1950 and March
1959 No 5076 remained in service until September 1964 when withdrawn from
Southall shed.
