An unidentified ex-GWR 4-6-0 Castle class locomotive is seen
standing at Platform 12 ready to depart with a Class A service to the West
Country. The letters on the smokebox provided information to signalmen and
other railway staff of the train's destination. The letter C represents the
Exeter and Plymouth Districts within the Western Region whilst the number 37
provided the information that the train would terminate at or between Exeter
and Dulverton on the Barnstable branch.
