The first of the main girders being lowered on to their supporting columns by the progressive removal of the sleepers

The first of the main girders being lowered on to their supporting columns by the progressive removal of the sleepers from the top of the timber trestles. The timber trestle on the left had 16 flanged wheels (15 inch diameter) to allow it to be moved along the temporary four rail track to the required position. According to the Great Western Railway Magazine article the erection of these three main girders took a dozen men about a fortnight to complete (excluding the labour required to build the trestles and the construction of the temporary four rail track.
