Ex LMS Fowler 3P 2-6-2T No 40002 at Birmingham Snow Hill Platform 7 on the 6.45pm local passenger service to Leamington

Ex-LMS Fowler 3P 2-6-2T No 40002 at Birmingham Snow Hill Platform 7 on the 6:45pm local passenger service to Leamington on Tuesday 28th June 1949. This locomotive was loaned to the Western Region of British Railways shortly after nationalisation because of a shortage of motive power. The four coach suburban B set is made up of a pair of (diagram E103) composite toplight coaches between a pair of similar (diagram D67) brake thirds. These 57 foot long, steel panelled carriages were built in March 1922 and condemned in February 1966. They were unusual in having a steel angle truss sub-frame instead of the standard multi-bar trusses. Two sets were allocated to the Birmingham division at about this time – Set 11 (Running numbers 3813-7915-7916-3814) and Set 12 (Running numbers 3815-7917-7918-3816). No 40002 was built as LMS No 2 in March 1930 at Derby Works as part of lot 55, but renumbered when taken into British Railways ownership at nationalisation. No 40002 was withdrawn from service in November 1959 while at Wolverton Carriage Works (99W), where it had been in operating as the works shunter. It was stored at Bletchley shed until April 1961, when it was moved to Crewe works and scrapped in June 1961.
