LNER 4-6-2 A3 No 4472 'Flying Scotsman' on a down special stands at Snow Hill station on 18th September 1965. Built by Doncaster Plant as GNR No 1472 in February 1922, No 4472 was allocated the number 4472 by the LNER in March 1924 which it carried until January 1946 when it was initially renumbered by the LNER as No 502 to be quickly changed in May 1946 as No 103. In March 1948 British Railways initially allocated the locomotive the number E103 (E standing for Eastern Region) before adding 60,000 to all former LNER locomotives which resulted in Flying Scotsman being renumbered as No 60103 which it carried until January 1963 when it was withdrawn from 34A Kings Cross shed to be preserved.
