GWR 0-4-2T 517 class No 1432 and GWR 2-4-2T 36xx class No 3601 are seen standing on the tracks leading to Henley-in-Arden locomotive shed. Colin Maggs wrote in his book Branch Lines of Warwickshire that the original photograph was entitled 'Ancient and Modern', as No 1432 was built in September 1877 whilst No 3601 was built in February 1902. However as Colin points out, the irony was that the older locomotive was to remain in service until October 1932 which was nineteen months after No 3601 had been scrapped. The 2-4-2Ts were principally designed for fast suburban trains and were superceded by the introduction of the larger 2-6-2Ts.
