GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Hockley Station: gwrhd109a
Close up of image 'gwrhd109' showing the passenger buildings
on the up platform and the large disc signals provided in lieu of semaphore
arms. Because of the canopy and the curve of the line it was necessary for the
GWR to provide a signal for both the platform and the centre line but with a
'sighting' board placed behind them to help drivers to see whether or not it
was safe to proceed (see 'gwrhg1114a' for an
example employed at Hall Green). In this instance the GWR have resolved this
problem by using large pivot signals. The disc's background colour of white
acting as the sighting board and the black stripe acting as the signal arm.
