GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton

Hockley Station: gwrhd1648

Map showing locations covered by the GWR's new service of 'Railhead Distribution for Speed and Satisfaction'

The Railhead Distribution service in Birmingham extended for approximately twenty miles from Hockley Goods Depot in all directions, and included areas to the North and East where the Great Western Railway had no traditional railway infrastructure. The service allowed the Railway to concentrate vehicles, manpower and garage facilities, which allowed a better utilisation of resources and at a time when road vehicles were still prone to reliability issues, maximised their availability. In addition to van deliveries from the Railhead Distribution centres, facilities were provided to directly trans-ship loaded containers to flatbed lorries for single or multiple deliveries. Container deliveries were normally limited to a maximum of five consignees, with an additional 2 shillings and 6 pence charged in 1935 for each additional delivery point.
