The three storey extension being added to the old Inwards (or Bottom) shed and warehouse during 1930

The three storey extension being added to the old Inwards (or Bottom) shed and warehouse during 1930. The work was undertaken in a period of industrial depression, under the Governments Development (Loan Guarantees and Grants) Act of 1929, which aimed to stimulate growth and alleviate unemployment, by paying the interest on approved worthwhile capital works. One of the Great Western Railway's strategies was to expand their warehousing facilities at railheads so that they could capture more trade by providing discounts to companies who used both their rail distribution and warehouse storage. The extension was a steel framed building with brick panelling, 92 feet long by 117 feet wide. It was equipped with a one ton hoist and a 30cwt lift (supplied by William Wadsworth & Son Ltd of Bolton) serving all floors, plus a spiral chute from the upper floors to the platform level. The exterior of the completed work can be seen in 'gwrhd703'.
