Great Western Railway two horse covered tilt van No 417 outside the old ‘Inwards shed and Warehouse’ in Hockley Goods Yard in 1921

Great Western Railway two horse covered tilt van No 417 outside the old ‘Inwards shed and Warehouse’ in Hockley Goods Yard in 1921. According to the drawing of a standard two horse van issued in 1912, it was designed to carry 4 tons 10 cwt. The axles rested on lever springs and after 1915 ‘Artillery pattern’ twelve spoked wheels became the standard. The wheels were dished to reduce the strain on the axle. The smaller diameter front wheels of a tilt van were articulated. The tilt van had wooden sides extending approximately 2 foot above the vehicle floor and had fixed iron hoops supporting a canvas sheet roof. The driver sat in a seat and had a foot brake which operated against the rim of the rear wheel.
