Close up of image 'gwrhd691' showing the Outward and Tranship shed, the sidings running adjacent to it and several access doors. On the right there is an entrance which allowed traffic to proceed directly inside, whereas to its left and at intervals along the shed's length, other entrances can be seen. In one instance the entrance's door has been closed. Additional entrances along the length of the shed allowed wagons to be moved either inwards or outwards without the need to shunt intervening wagons. Wagon turntables were located on the lines inside and out which allowed the wagons to be rotated at 90° to accommodate these workings. The yard lamps, provided with access ladders to either side, whilst providing some visibility for night working, are not tall enough to prevent significant shadows and therefore workmen would still need to exercise maximum care. Note the newly repaired side sheeting above the entrance to the old Outwards and Tranship shed probably installed to replace damaged sheeting caused by smoke and perhaps thrown embers from shunting locomotives.
