The old Inwards shed being modified on 11th July 1938 for
use for warehousing by the addition of a shunting spur. The redevelopment and
enlargement of the Outward and Tranship shed to provide a single facility to
accommodate all types of shipments allowed the GWR to provide additional
facilities by changing the use of the old Inwards shed. Originally the
warehouse had two tracks laid centrally inside with a deck - a platform - on
either side to allow road vehicles to gain access. The warehouse was now
accessed by road from the Pitsford Street side of the building. This allowed
the authorities to build a shunting spur from the south end of the sidings into
and through the building on the opposite side of the warehouse by removing a
section of wall sufficiently long enough to accommodate a spur entering the
building on the diagonal. As part of this plan, the canopy that projected
outwards along the side of the shed was removed. See image 'gwrhd723' to see the completed works.
