GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Handsworth & Smethwick: gwrhs1590
GWR Star class 4-6-0 'King Henry' No 4027 is seen on an up
Birkenhead express service at Handsworth Junction prior to July 1927. The GWR
decision to name their new class of powerful 4-6-0 locomotives after the Kings
of England meant that the locomotive needed its name changing to 'The Norwegian
Monarch' which was completed in July 1927. The locomotive, which was built in
1909, received a modification to the name in November when the name was
shortened to 'Norwegian Monarch' which it carried until it was withdrawn in
October 1934.
