GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Leamington Spa - GWR Locomotives: gwrls201
A GWR 51xx class 2-6-2T Prairie enters the station on an up
local prior to the rebuilding of the station in the late 1930s. The locomotive
number cannot be identified, but the 51xx class can be distinguished from the
later 5101 class by the square front drop ends and internal steam pipes. The
high cab, tall safety valve bonnet, tapered copper topped chimney and
locomotive livery all suggest the photograph was taken in the early
1930s. The coaches are a Birmingham A set comprising four
70ft non-corridor steel panelled toplight stock built in November 1913. There
are two diagram E97 composite coaches (5 first class and 6 third class
compartments) with a diagram D55 brake third coach (8 third class compartments)
at each end. These coaches remained in use until the 1950's.
