Looking towards London showing both bay platforms at the Birmingham end of the station on 22nd March 1937. The photograph amply shows that the platform level of the original station was much lower than that seen on the extended platform on the right. This was because the design of early passenger coaches was based up on the design of stage coaches in the 1830s. Passengers accessed such road vehicles by climbing upwards and into or onto the carriage. The development of the railway passenger coach over the next 50 years resulted in much longer vehicles being required. Such vehicles needed substantial underframes to carry the weight and bogies to negotiate tight curves. These design changes resulted in the internal floor height of the coach being raised which in turn requiried platforms to be raised significantly. The rebuilding of the station had commenced with the erection of new canopies to the Birmingham end of the down platform. To its right are coaches forming a local passenger services to Stratford upon Avon. On the left is a local passenger service ready to depart for Snow Hill or Moor Street.
