GWR 90xx Class 4-4-0 No 3218 is seen prepared for its next trip whilst on the left is an unidentified 0-6-0PT locomotive on 4th December 1938. A distinctive GWR practice was to hook the coupling to the front buffers to prevent it swinging when on the move. Similarly the practice of storing unused lamps on the side of the running plate was common GWR practice. The nickname for this class was Dukedog since the locomotives were composed of former Duke Class boilers on Bulldog Class frames. As such they were one of the last steam locomotive classes to retain outside frames. Built by Swindon works in April 1938 No 3218 remained in service until June 1960 when it was withdrawn from 84J Newydd shed in Croes. It had been intended to allocate it the name Earl of Birkenhead but this was never fitted.
