Erection of the steel framework and braced roof trusses of the four hundred foot long top level shed nears completion

Erection of the steel framework and braced roof trusses of the four hundred foot long top level shed nears completion. With the exception of the guyed derrick crane on the left, no large construction equipment is visible. The shed consisted of two parallel bays, with the bay on the left, nearest the passenger station, being slightly narrower. This bay would support the beam for the travelling over-head crane (see gwrms1214). Two sidings would run on the inside of either side of the shed with a raised platform being constructed adjacent to the one in the narrower bay to facilitate unloading and storage – a corner of this platform can be seen in the left foreground. The construction of the goods depot at Moor Street was contracted to Mr T Rowbottom of Coventry Road, Birmingham, who subcontracted the steelwork fabrication and erection to Messrs EC & J Keay, Ltd of Corporation Street, Birmingham. Messrs Keay fabricated steelwork at their James Bridge Works at Darlaston, which had rail access.
