This is a 12 ton shock absorbing van (coded SHOCVAN) built to British Railways
diagram 1/209. The body was one foot shorter than the standard covered van
design to allow for shock absorbing movement, but was similar in construction
with; Wolverton-type pressed steel ends fitted with a single central bonnet
ventilator and Swindon style sides - horizontally planked body and vertically
planked hinged side doors, both with diagonal framing. The underframe was
identical to that used on other British Railways wagons, with fully fitted
vacuum brakes, Morton brake levers and instanter couplings.
A total of 3,000 of these covered shock absorbing wagons
were built to this diagram, as detailed below:
