GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Solihull Station: gwrs2316
Ex-LMS 3P 2-6-2T No 40002 is seen on a down local stopping
service to Birmingham Snow Hill in July 1947. The ex-LMS locomotive had been
loaned when the newly formed Western Region of British Railways had suffered a
shortage of locomotives combined with poor quality coal. On the right are two
sidings, one being used to stable coaching stock which in all probability was
to be used for an excursion having been prepared by Tyseley carriage sidings.
The siding in between is the down refuge siding. The bracket signal at the rear
of the train controlled a set of crossings that facilitated up and down
transfers whilst the the single arm signal at the front controlled relief line
transfers, Solihull being often used as a starting point for services to
Birmingham. Built by Derby works in March 1930, No 40002 was to remain in
service until November 1959 when it was withdrawn from 99W Wolverton works.
