When the locomotive had completed its duties for the day it would be disposed of by the crew dropping the fire at one of the pits in front of the shed and cleaning the char left in the smokebox. With still sufficient steam in its boiler the locomotive would then take on water from one of the water columns adjacent to the pits and then run back to the coaling stage to be topped up ready for its next trip. The chargeman on duty was authorised to drive the locomotives himself and during the night he would move the locomotives so that they were secured in the order their order of departure.
