The gas works originally had a single siding which was at the back of the coal yard and only accessed by the shunter via a back shunt which held around two or three wagons. This arrangement meant that the locomotive collecting the wagons had to use the back shunt and propel them in to No 1 road before collecting fully laden wagons from No 2 road and shunting these in to the retort house. It was important to carry out the gas works shunts first because access might be prevented when the adjacent coal yard was being shunted.
