Looking towards Alcester Road bridge from the Birmingham end down platform with Stratford upon Avon's livestock market on the left. In the distance and through the bridge can be seen Stratford on Avon West Signal Box. The livestock market was, according to Vic Mitchell and Keith Smith in their book entitled Stratford Upon Avon to Cheltenham known as 'Smithfield'. The market was an important source of income for the railways because livestock would often be transported from out lying areas to the market by rail as well as the sold livestock being transporting to the various abattoirs across the region. In this photograph a number of cattle vans or horses boxes are seen standing the other side of the fence.
