An exterior view of Tyseley Station's booking office which was located at road level above the island platform and on the bridge which carried the road over the main and relief lines on 25th April 1970. The tower on the right accommodated the lift which was used to transfer both parcels traffic and passenger luggage to the station platform below (see 'gwrt295a'). On the left can be seen the covered stairs to the relief lines platform.

Instructions for working the Parcels lift were issued in the Appendix to the Service Time Tables dated 1929 and are reproduced here:

  1. This lift must only be used for dealing with luggage, parcels, milk, etc, traffic, and no person except the Company staff must be permitted to ascend or descend with the lift.
  2. The lift, which is worked by electric power, will be raised and lowered by the Porter in charge of same when standing on the lift platform, and he must, before he sets the lift in motion, satisfy himself that nothing in the lift will cause an obstruction while ascending or descending.
  3. When wheel vehicles are placed on the lift, the person working the lift will be responsible for properly securing them with scotches, if necessary, so as to prevent the possibility of obstructing the free and safe working of the lift. On no account must any wheel vehicle or load be sent up or down in the lift unless accompanied by the person in charge of it, who will responsible for seeing the vehicle and load is kept clear. The lift is fitted with push-button control, and the gates are so interlocked with the lift that unless they are properly fastened it is impossible for the lift to be set in motion. A stop button is provided for use in case of emergency. The lift automatically stops at the top and bottom levels. If it is necessary to reverse the lift after setting it in motion it should first be stopped.
  4. The lift platform must always be left at the bottom level when the lift has finished working for the day.
  5. Wheel vehicles must be placed on the lift platform in such a manner as to avoid damage to the back of the cage.
  6. The total load on the lift must not exceed 30 cwt.
  7. Lad Porters and the staff of the Bookstall must not, under any circumstances be allowed to work the lift.
  8. No unauthorised person must be allowed to use the lift, and any member of the staff using it improperly or carelessly will be severely dealt with.
  9. The Station Master or person in charge of the Station must see that no improper use is made of the lift, and that the staff using it do so in a proper manner and avoid waste of power, and also arrange that before closing the station at night the lift is put at the bottom level. Men ascending and descending in the lift must keep will clear inside the cage when the lift is in motion.
  10. The Porter taking from the platform to the higher level in the lift cycles and other machines accompanying passengers is responsible for collecting from the passenger the ticket for same.
