Ex-GWR 4-6-0 Castle class No 5047 'Earl of Dartmouth' is seen at the head of the main portion of the up Cornishman from Penzance to Wolverhampton on 15th June 1957

Ex-GWR 4-6-0 Castle class No 5047 'Earl of Dartmouth' is seen at the head of the main portion of the up Cornishman from Penzance to Wolverhampton on 15th June 1957. Built at Swindon works to Lot 303 in April 1936 No 5047 was originally named 'Compton Castle' but after first being allocated to Landore shed in Swansea it was renamed in August 1937. Lasting in service until withdrawn in September 1962 from 84A Stafford Road shed in Wolverhampton No 5047 was scrapped in March 1963 by Swindon works although its front bogie set was used for the Jodrell Telescope.
