Close up of image 'lnwr_add1483' showing the porter's barrow
crossing which ran between the two platforms at the Birmingham end of the
station. Behind the lattice post of the down signals is the platelayers hut
used as a base by the gang maintaining this section of the line. Platelayers
were responsible for inspecting and maintaining the track, including all its
component parts such as rails, sleepers, fishplates, bolts, etc. Their duties
include greasing points, and generally watching for wear and tear. When
sections of track require complete replacement, larger teams of platelayers
would be drafted in to work together, normally over a weekend.
