Looking towards Rugby across the level crossing as the down Irish Mail passes Atherstone's Signal Box prior to the quadrupling of the line on 1 July 1901. In front of the level crossing can be seen a bridge which carried the railway over an underpass. The underpass was built as part of the original railway - as found at Nuneaton, however it was built in 1847 and was designed to accommodate rural traffic rather than the much larger loads found on the roads within a couple of decades. The dispute between the LNWR and Warwickshire County Council over the level crossing resulted in the council winning a court order limiting the speed of rail traffic to 4 mph. The two sets of signals have replaced the signal seen in image 'lnwr_ath1275'.
