LMS Route: Nuneaton to Leamington
Old Milverton Lineside Views: lnwr_oldmil1452
Ex-LMS 7P 4-6-0 Re-built Patriot class No 45531 'Sir
Frederick Harrison' is seen at the head of an up diverted Birmingham to Euston
express in 1948. In all probability the photograph was taken on a Sunday and
the train has been diverted via Leamington to Rugby due to engineering works
between Coventry and Rugby. If the train had originating at Birmingham without
the need to call at Coventry, it would have used the Berkswell to Kenilworth
cut off. This diversionary route was used extensively in the 1960s during the
rebuilding of Coventry and the electrification of the West Coast main line.
John Dews notes, 'the locomotive was originally classified by the LMS as 5XP as
built by Fowler and then 6P when rebuilt with the Standard 2A tapered boiler.
Also of interest is that the locomotive has yet to receive the smoke deflectors
that gave the class its distinctive look.
