The words 'British Railways' are on the tender whilst having the Midland Region number commencing with the number '4' on its smoke box door. The corporate house style using the wording 'British Railways' was very quickly replaced by the emblem nicknamed the 'cycling' lion. The initial British Railways numbering scheme was to use the letter 'M' in front of the LMS number so in the case above it would have been 'M5531'. Originally built as a LNWR Claughton No 45531 was rebuilt at Crewe works in April 1933 as one of the new LMS Patriot class locomotives. After receiving its name in 1937, No 45531 was again rebuilt in December 1947 with the same 2A boiler as fitted by Stanier to the Royal Scot class. Soon to be fitted with smoke deflectors, No 45531 remained in service until October 1965 when it was withdrawn from Kingmoor shed in Carlisle to be later cut up by GH Campbell of Airdrie in March 1966.
