Ex-LMS 7P 4-6-2 No 46203 'Princess Margaret Rose' passes through on the fast up line at the head of a Liverpool to Euston service on 16th April 1949. A member of Stanier's Princess Royal Class - the precursor to his Coronation Class (see image 'lnwr_tam2352') - No 46203 was built by Crewe works in July 1935 and was to remain in service until October 1962 when it was withdrawn from 12B Upperby shed. Thirteen members of the class were built by Crewe works, between 1933 and 1935, with two being preserved. The class were built in two batches; the first batch was two locomotives being built to prove the design, whilst the second batch of eleven, which included a single example of an experimental version using steam turbines instead of cylinders. This locomotive was allocated the running number No 6202 but was known by the unofficial name of 'Turbomotive'. The Princess Royal Class locomotives were known to railwaymen as "Lizzies", after the second example of the class named in honour of Princess Elizabeth who later became Queen Elizabeth II.
