Ex-LMS 4-6-0 6P Rebuilt Royal Scot No 6160 'Queen Victoria's
Rifleman' at speed on the down Manchester service on 17th May 1948. The
locomotive is still carrying its LMS livery and has not yet been allocated its
British Railways number. This was achieved by adding 40,000 to the LMS' running
numbers, hence No 6160 became No 46160, the number being applied in August
1948. The locomotive had been built with parallel boilers by Derby works in
August 1930 but when these were life expired the opportunity was taken to
replace them with a modified tapered boiler based on the design used on British
Legion, the rebuilt experimental Fury locomotive. The locomotive remained in
service until May 1965 when it was withdrawn from 12A Kingmoor shed in
Carlisle. The rebuilt Royal Scots had their true origins when the LMS rebuilt
two LMS Jubilee Class locomotives with Type 2A boilers in 1942.
Between 1943 and 1955 the whole class was rebuilt, the
rebuild being quite substantial, requiring new boiler, frames and cylinders.
But in most cases the original frame stretchers, wheels, cab and fittings were
retained. The usual procedure carried out was that as each locomotive arrived
for rebuilding, it was stripped and the identity transferred to a fresh
frameset prepared using the parts recovered from the locomotive that had
previously been re-built. The new frames were slightly shorter than the
originals. Thus, most rebuilt examples retained their own cab, wheels etc., but
most of the frame stretchers, and other integral parts of the frame were from
the previously re-built locomotive. The new 'Rebuilt Scot' design was carried
out under the auspices of William Stanier, who was then engaged on war work,
and so the actual design work was undertaken by George Ivatt and ES Cox.
