Ex-LNWR 2P 4-6-0 'Experiment' class No 5491 'Prince George' stands at Tamworth on an up stopping train

Ex-LNWR 2P 4-6-0 'Experiment' class No 5491 'Prince George' stands at Tamworth on an up stopping train. Built by Crewe works as LNWR No 1135 in September 1907, No 5491 was so renumbered by the LMS in March 1927 which it carried until it was withdrawn from service in June 1934. They were an extended version of George Whale's own 4-4-0 Precursor class design, having three axles instead of two and with slightly smaller driving wheels. The first member of the class, No 66 'Experiment' was built in 1905 with a total of 105 being constructed by Crewe works until 1910. The LNWR's practice of reusing the numbers and names of withdrawn locomotives resulted in the numbering system being completely haphazard unlike other companies which assigned series of numbers to one design. A further development of the design, a 19 inch Express Goods class with smaller driving wheels was also built from 1906. From 1911, a superheated version of the Experiment class, the Prince of Wales class was built.
