Ex-LNWR 4-6-0 Claughton class No 5988 'Private W Wood VC' is seen travelling at speed with at least twelve coaches behind the tender on an up express service to Euston. Built in April 1920 at Crewe works as LNWR No 1097 it was named in February 1922 but only carried the name until April 1926. Renumbered by the LMS in January 1927 No 5988 was withdrawn to be rebuilt as Patriot class locomotive No 5536 when she reacquired the name. (See image 'lnwr_nupa1171')
