Berkswell and Balsall Common: lnwrberk1313b

This close up of image 'lnwrberk1313' showing the two platforms staggered either side of the level crossing and the under-bridge with the station master's house on the left. The underbridge, which can just about accommodate a car, can be seen on the left between the mineral wagon and the crossing gate. In the early years the underbridge only had to accommodate horse-drawn traffic and livestock being driven to market. Today the narrow road is one-way running from right to left in this view.

'Dockers Lane', as the station was first known, was renamed 'Berkswell' in 1853 and 'Berkswell & Balsall Common' in 1865, the same year the station began handling goods traffic. It is believed the original name 'Dockers' referred to a local person.
