Looking towards Coventry with the Grand Junction signal cabin in the centre of the photograph on 10th May 1960. This view is from a train travelling over Vauxhall Viaduct as seen in image 'lnwrbhm_sa2314b'. The signal cabin is located between the two sets of lines for Coventry and Euston on the left and Tamworth and Derby on the right, the latter passing under the mainline to London and then sweeping left to continue on to Saltley. With Derby being the headquarters of the Midland Railway its directors naturally viewed Derby as being the centre of the universe and adopted the practice of classifying lines heading towards Derby as being the up line. This is why on occasion there can be an apparent confusion when describing the direction of travel between the lines of the LNWR and MR.
