British Railways built 'Black 5' 4-6-0 No 44685 stands at the East end of Platform 3 with a New Street to Euston express passenger service on 10th August 1963 Built at Horwich works in August 1950, No 44685 was another British Railways built LMS design but this time with the Skefco roller bearings on the main driving wheels in an experiment to see if this would increase mileage and better riding between repairs. Despite its filthy condition and looking as if it was just months away from the scrap yard, No 44685 remained in service until April 1967 when it was withdrawn from Crewe South shed to be scrapped in January 1968 by Bird's of Morriston near Swansea.
