Ex-LMS 5MT 4-6-0 No 44767, the very last locomotive built by the LMS, is seen starting away from Platform 3 with a service to Euston on 24th April 1948. Not only was No 44767 completed on 31st December 1947, the very last day of the LMS as a company before taken over by the Railway Executive of the British Transport Commission, it was unique amongst the 842 strong class in that it featured outside Stephenson link motion in addition to other experimental features; a double chimney, Timken roller bearings throughout and electric lighting. These modifications were part of a series of experiments by George Ivatt to improve the already excellent William Stanier-designed 'Black 5'. It is now preserved carrying the name George Stephenson though this was added in preservation days.
