Ex-LMS 5MT 4-6-0 No 44919 is seen working hard as it banks the Pines Express from Platform 9 on Saturday 14th January 1961. Services from the West side of New Street station faced a steep climb through the tunnels both on the LNWR Stour Valley line or the Midland route using the West Suburban Railway. Extra assistance was often required particularly with heavily loaded trains and on wet and cold days making the rails slippery. Built at Crewe works in December 1945 Saltley based No 44919 was to remain in service until December 1966 when it was withdrawn from Oxley shed in Wolverhampton to be scrapped in August 1967 by J Cashmore of Newport.
