Ex-LMS 5MT 4-6-0 No 45430, sporting shed plate 21D and reporting number 1G24, is seen entering Platform 4 at the head of a Euston to Wolverhampton express service circa 1963. The tunnel which passed under Worcester Street had an incline at both ends, needed to pass under the Great Western's Snow Hill to Paddington mainline, and which always gave some concern to crews of poorly steaming locomotives on wet and slippery rails. Built by the Armstrong Whitworth Company in November 1937 No 45430 was to remain in service until September 1966 when it was withdrawn from Shrewsbury shed to be scrapped in March 1967 by G Cohen of Morriston near Swansea.
