British Railways Standard Class 5 4-6-0 No 73144 is seen standing at the East end of Platform 9 adjacent to Signal Box No 2 at the head of an up express

British Railways Standard Class 5 4-6-0 No 73144 is seen departing the East end of Platform 9 at the head the 3 15pm to Leicester on Sat 18th May 1957. Built in December 1956 at Derby works, No 73144 was a member of the class modified to be equipped with Caprotti valve gear. British Railway's standard design feature of a high running plate and deep front to the bufferbeam at least meant that this modification did not look as ugly as it did on Stanier's Black 5 locomotives as seen in 'lnwrbns_br340'. The locomotive was stabled at Leicester Midland shed at the time of the photograph although when withdrawn at the end of a very short working life in August 1967 it was based at Patricroft shed in Manchester followed by being scrapped in February 1968 by J Cashmore of Newport.
