Ex-Midland Railway 2-4-0 No 1 is seen standing at the West end of Platform 5 whilst at the head of a local passenger service on 10th July 1925. Designed by Kirtley this class was once the mainstay of Birmingham to Bristol express services. The distinctive curved outside frames of the class was a common feature of Victorian design on many railways. Built at Derby works in September 1866 No 1 was rebuilt by SW Johnson in December 1896 and was to remain in service until September 1930 when it was it was set a side to be restored as No 156A, its former Midland identity. Unfortunately Stanier chose not to preserve the locomotive, together with other preserved classes, although fortunately classmate No 2 was preserved as No 158A and was exhibited at New Street in June 1954 as part of the station's centenary celebrations.
