Ex-LNWR 4-4-0 George the Fifth class No 5331 'JP Bickersteth' is seen arriving at Platform 1 at the head of a Birmingham to Rugby local passenger service. This evocative photograph captures the almost pure LNWR atmosphere of New Street's LNWR portion which continued up until the Second World War. The leading coach behind No 5331 is a LNWR saloon of some vintage. Built as LNWR No 2271 by Crewe works in October 1910, No 5331 received its LMS number in July 1927 and continued in service until November 1938 when it was withdrawn from Dallam shed in Warrington for immediate scrapping by Crewe works.
