The Midland Railway's Parcel Offices were located to the left of the photographer on the corner of Worcester Street and Station Street. The presence of the Midland Railway at New Street station was due to running agreements between the Midland and the LNWR established in the 1840s. Initially there was no demarcation within the station and both railway companies used the extension. Within four years of opening the Midland had sole use of the extension which was formally recognised in 1897 when New Street become a joint station. However from the start, the LNWR provided all of the equipment and manpower for operating the signalling within the confines of the enlarged station.
