Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1859b

Close up of image 'lnwrbns_str1859' showing the enlarged station building on Platform 3 which was expanded to include an additional booking office on the ground floor. The date of the enlargement is not known but occurred at sometime between the building of the Midland extension - see image 'lnwrbns_str1866a' to see it in original condition in September 1885 - and the date of this photograph taken in June 1905. Whereas the West side of the original building accommodated just the steps to the passenger footbridge and on the right the refreshment room , this close up shows the installation of the booking office. This can be confirmed by counting the number of columns to the rear of the building. Richard Foster states that the LNWR had no fewer than six booking offices: two adjacent to Stephenson Street, two on the LNWR's side of Queens Drive and two near the Station Street entrance in the extension.
