Birmingham New Street Station: lnwrbns_str1911a

Close up of image 'lnwrbns_str1911' showing the water tank and Permanent Way buildings erected behind New Street No 5 Signal Box and adjacent to Hill Street. The two timber huts on the left of the brick building are Webb designed LNWR standard all timber portable huts of the type introduced in 1885. The hut on the right is thought to be the signal linesman's room used as a temporary block post in the immediate aftermath of the bombing on 16th October 1940. The tracks behind the signal box carried southbound trains into the station, either for the Stour Valley Bay platforms or for the through platforms for trains from Wolverhampton. The limited space available for the signal gantry saw one of its supports erected inside the signal box as can be seen through the window on the right.
